Build an Army Upgrade damage before you upgrade walking

Public runs show speed and damage as separate barracks ticks. Only one of them beats the first sergeant.

Damage vs Speed Upgrades

Build an Army’s barracks is not only a unit shop. Public footage of LiveForFun place 76904351006435 shows a second panel after you have infantry on the plot: upgrades, with at least two named ticks — damage and speed. That split is easy to waste. Speed looks like progress. Damage is what stops the first ambush from deleting the send.

This page is the upgrade fork. The shop as a whole is the Barracks Guide. The wipe that happens when you pick wrong is How to Beat Ambushes. Tanks, machine gunners, and medics — when they actually appear — still sit on top of these ticks; they do not replace them. See Tanks.

The game has been live since 7 August 2025 on free four-player servers. Official copy says fight, earn money, and upgrade your troops every battle. It does not publish a damage table. We rank the fork by what a march does after the spend: farther survival, more cash on Undeploy, better leftover when you quit.

What footage actually shows

After the starter infantry is placed, the upgrade UI offers speed and damage. One public run buys a damage tick, calls out about five damage per hit, and still melts on sergeants until more damage lands. That is the whole early lesson. The number will move with patches. The rule will not: a body that cannot win the first contact does not need to arrive at that contact faster.

Speed is real. It is not a rumor. It is also not the first-hour answer. A faster unupgraded infantry reaches the sergeant pack sooner and dies on the same tile. You spent cash to lose the trade earlier.

There is no documented third upgrade axis in the public clips we are willing to stand on. If a later patch adds armor, range, or a unique-ability slot, it will show up in the barracks after a paying march — the same way rare and legendary stock does. Until then, do not invent a five-row upgrade tree copied from another army tycoon.

Buy damage until the pack stops being a joke

Put the first pouches into damage. Repeat until the starter infantry starts winning hits instead of vanishing. That is also the S-tier pattern on the unit tier list: a damage-upgraded core that clears sergeants.

Then buy another body that can use that damage, or a machine gunner / medic / tank if the shop is honestly stocking them. Then look at speed. Speed on a line that already walks is extra distance per minute, which is extra cash, which is the next damage tick. Speed on a line that dies in two seconds is cosmetics.

Undeploy after a paying stretch, spend, Deploy again. That loop is How to Play and How to Earn Money. The upgrade fork is just which row you click when you are back at the barracks.

When speed is actually worth it

Buy speed when all of these are true:

  • The current line already survives the first sergeant pack.
  • You have already spent on damage this session.
  • The bottleneck is how long the walk takes, not whether the walk exists.
  • You are about to log out and want the leftover column to cover more ground while you are away. Offline pay still needs a living Deploy — Offline Earnings.

If any item is false, buy damage or a real unit. A tank at the front (public placement) plus damage is a stronger logout lineup than a speedy smear of default infantry.

Robux packs that include extra cash can fund either tick. They are not an upgrade type. Nuke! at 7,214 Robux is still an OP skip button, not a damage substitute. Sprint Permanent is offsale and was avatar speed anyway, not army speed.

What upgrades will not do

They will not redeem codes. None are confirmed for this title as of September 2026. They will not unlock rare and legendary unique-ability units by themselves — those still gate on the march, as in How to Unlock Units. They will not place troops for you. They will not Deploy.

Scripts that remote-buy units skip the barracks UI. They do not skip the damage rule. Infinite troops with no damage upgrade is a wider sergeant snack. That warning lives on Scripts.

Patch requests for new upgrade rows belong on the LiveForFun group wall. When something ships, Updates is the log. Until a new axis is public, this page stays a two-row fork: damage first, speed later.

A simple spend order you can remember

Infantry placed. Damage until the first pack loses. Extra bodies or a machine gunner / medic / tank if the shop shows them. Speed once the line is walking. Logout on a living Deploy. If you reverse that, you will write a comment about the game being unfair while a sergeant does the job the shop told you to prepare for.

Camera if you cannot find the upgrade panel: Controls. First hour if you still have not survived a send: Getting Started.

Upgrade damage until the first sergeant pack is a fight instead of a delete key. Then speed is a distance multiplier, not a coping mechanism.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Should I upgrade damage or speed first in Build an Army?

Damage first. Speed on a line that dies to sergeants only loses faster. The ambush write-up is How to Beat Ambushes.

Are damage and speed both real upgrades?

Yes. Public footage of this place shows both ticks in the barracks upgrade UI. We do not invent extra axes.

When is speed worth buying?

After the current line already clears the first pack and you want more distance per minute, including before an offline logout. See Offline Earnings.

Do tanks or medics replace upgrades?

No. They still walk the same lane. Place them, Deploy them, and keep damage on the core. Tanks covers the vehicle.

Can I skip upgrades with codes or Nuke!?

No confirmed codes as of September 2026. Nuke! is a 7,214 Robux OP pass. Shop spend is still in the Barracks Guide.

Where do I find the upgrade panel?

In the barracks after infantry is on the plot. Button honesty is on Controls; the first buy is Getting Started.
